Striped Hat, Cowl & Fingerless Mitts
A matching set comprising a striped cowl, striped hat, and colour block fingerless mitts that I knitted for my niece as a gift.
This cute set used two 100g balls of 4ply sock yarn. I used a dark red (Colour A) contrasting with a silver grey (Colour B). I love this beautiful combination of colours.
Crofthoose Hat & Fingerless Gloves
A follow-up photo story of the Crofthoose Hat and Fingerless Gloves designed by Ella Gordon. The previous post is a Shetland Colour Story – Crofthoose Hat & Fingerless Gloves and goes into detail about the yarn and colours chosen.
I am just showing how beautiful these patterns are when worn. I loved knitting these and adore wearing them even more when out for a dog walk on a cold Autumn day.
How to Match the Colour Pattern on Fingerless Mitts and Socks
“Could you please tell me the best way to match the yarn for the second sock so you have a lovely matching pair?”
This is a question I am asked quite regularly.
I am busy knitting fingerless mitts for my niece as part of her Christmas present. I used a now discontinued Regia sock yarn (other beautiful sock yarns are available in the Yarn Shop) and 2.75mm KnitPro Karbonz double-pointed needles (which I really love using).[Read More]
A Shetland Colour Story – Crofthoose Hat & Fingerless Gloves
When we visited Shetland in September 2015 we both took a huge number of photos. Since then I’ve been using my photos as colour inspiration for fair isle projects. Normally, I show photos of the finished items when I’m wearing them but the series A Shetland Colour Story will explore how I use my photos to help create a colour palette for the project I want to knit.
I always start by creating a collage of photos that create a sense of place, colour and bring back memories of our visit.[Read More]
Opal Schafpate Hat & Fingerless Mitts
The Opal Schafpate Hat & Fingerless Mitts were knit for my mother-in-law as part of her Christmas present. My mother-in-law loves walking and belongs to a couple of walking groups so I thought this would be a useful present for her. She loves to wear subtle colours so I opted for the Opal Schafpate VII Alpine Flower 8903. Choose your favourite opal Schafpate sock yarn in the yarn shop.
This is my Sock Head Slouch Hat No2. It was knit using the shorter length of the Sock Head Slouch Hat designed by Kelly McClure.[Read More]
Little Prince Socks & Fingerless Mitts
Have you ever wondered just what can be made from 100g of sock yarn? I asked myself this question and decided to test it out with a ball of Opal Little Prince – Little Prince and the Geographer… I decided to see if I could knit a pair of socks and a pair of fingerless mitts.
I made life a little harder for myself by making the socks a matching pair of socks. This meant that I had to remove the yarn from the ball after finishing the first sock to cast on the second sock in the right place. All went well with the socks and they were finished leaving enough yarn hopefully to knit the fingerless mitts.[Read More]
Valentine Fingerless Mitts
These gorgeous Valentine Fingerless Mitts are based on my basic Fingerless Mitts pattern. The Valentine Fingerless Mitts fit the hand snugly by continuing a section of the ribbing from the cast on cuff to the cast off cuff through the stocking stitch section of the mitts.
Everyone who has worn these fingerless mitts loves the cosy fit. Sweet & Spicy 2 in Chilli 8616 is a delectable pink and biscuit colour combination that is very romantic and feminine. Perfect for wearing on Valentine’s Day![Read More]

These fair isle fingerless mitts are based on the Small Lozenge Star Gloves designed by Wilma Malcolmson and printed in Knitting Fair Isle Mittens and Gloves by Carol Rasmussen Noble. There are many beautiful charts in this book.
I used Mussel Blue from the Jamieson & Smith Shetland Heritage wool range for the main colour for these mitts.[Read More]
Red Fair Isle Fingerless Mitts
I love knitting fair isle. I also love fingerless mitts. So the Red Fair Isle Mitts are just the perfect combination. Fingerless Mitts are just so useful when walking the dog and throwing his sticks. J&S Shetland Heritage is 100% real shetland wool and is a wonderful fibre to knit with. The finished mitts are incredibly light weight yet so very warm and cosy.
The Red Fair Isle Fingerless Mitts are based on the Cunningsburgh Gloves pattern in the Art of Fair Isle Knitting by Ann Feitelson.
I used 4 colours of Jamieson and Smith Shetland Heritage wool.[Read More]
